5-Day Classic Distancia Tour East (Cabo de Gata Natural Park)

27th - 31st May 2024

The following are just some of the highlights of the tour;

  • La Contraviesa, mountain range well known for its Vineyards and Bodegas. Little has changed here over the centuries, many of the vinyards still use mule or ox to pull the plough and the horse and mule still provide the transport from the land to the Bodegas.
  • Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, characterised by its huge volcanic rock formations, some of the oldest geological features found in Europe and Andalucia's largest protected costal area.
  • Desierto Tabernas, (Tabernas Desert) the backdrop for the famous "Spaghetti Western" movies, including "The Good, the Bad & the Ugly" and "A Fistfull of Dollars" , the list goes on!
  • Guadix, well off the beaten path, the most interesting feature of this area is that many of the inhabitants still live underground in Cave Houses, "Barrio Troglodyte".
  • Sierra Nevada, at 3479m (11,415ft) is Spain's highest mountain range. It's peaks are covered with snow for most of the year and are visible from many points within Granada and Almeria Provinces.

The itinerary;

Day 1: Arrival
Arrive at Málaga Airport (AGP) where you will be met by one of our team and transported to your accommodation. After administration you will be given a short safety briefing and introduced to your Royal Enfield, following this, you have the remainder of the day to do as you please. There is a good choice of restaurants and tapas bars in the town, some offering their menus in English. Feel free to wander through the narrow streets in the old Mozarabic Quarter or take in the stunning views of the Sierra Nevada and surrounding countryside from the 15th century Arab Castle.

Day 2: Salobreña – Padules – San Jose
After having breakfast, your tour will begin. Leaving the hostel around 9:30 we start heading East through La Contraviesa, lower Alpujarras and Lujar de Andarax, legend has it that this is the oldest village in Spain, apparently it was founded by the grandson of Noah after the great flood🤔. Continuing South East towards Almeria before turning South and entering Cabo de Gata Natural park, tonight we stay in the coastal village of San Jose.

Day 3: Cabo de Gata - Tabernas - Guadix
This morning, we'll head North, passing through
Níjar before entering "Diserto Tabernas".  Europe has two deserts, both of them are in Spain and Tabernas is one of them. For over 70 years this enigmatic landscape has provided the backdrop for dozens of legendary films and hundreds of famous actors have also left their footprints here including Sean Connery & Clint Eastwood. Continuing West via Sierra de Cador we eventually head North for Puerto De La Ragua and onto Guadix.

Day 4: Guadix - Pinos Genil - Salobreña

Today will see us head South West through La Peza and Quentar. This whole area can only be described as stunningly beautiful. Most of this route has the snow capped peaks (October-June) of the Sierra Nevada as a back drop. This is one of our favourite routes, passing through kms of sweeping bends before the final leg of our journey through the Camino de Cabra and back to our base in Salobreña, arriving around 18:00.

Day 5: Departure
You are leaving today, and will be transported back to the airport for your departure flight home. Hopefully, you will have had an unforgettable experience, one that has enriched your soul and left you with a totally different impression of Spain.
